New Stuff?!

So, I've been looking at my blog, that basically consists of a ton of movie reviews, mixed in with random geeky stuff and random Chicago stuff. It's time to branch out a little bit. I'm gonna start posting ALL SORTS of things, including vacation hot spots! How exciting!

House on Haunted Hill (1999)

Urged by a sexy red-head to watch this movie again, I did so. And like the last time I saw it, I enjoyed it. A remake of a classic that became a classic itself. Fun movie.
When Eddie (Taye Diggs), Melissa (Bridgette Wilson), Sara (Ali Larter), Donald (Peter Gallagher) and Watson (Chris Kattan) accept tycoon Steven Price's (Geoffrey Rush) $1 million proposal to stay one night in a former insane asylum, they think it's child's play until Price's rigged antics are accompanied by real menacing spirits. Can everyone make it till dawn and win the prize money? Famke Janssen co-stars as Price's haughty wife, Evelyn.

A surprisingly multilayered plot/whodunit and a creepy atmosphere more than make up for an ending that wasn't quite up to par. You can tell the director is really passionate about the horror genre. Quite possibly the creepiest haunted house sets I've ever seen.

Some disagree but for a formula-genre movie, I have found this one to be quite original, spooky and welcome for repeat viewings. It really holds my interest and makes me sit on the edge of my seat! By definition, a movie like this has to have cheesy and inexplicable plot twists (esp. the classic “let’s split up and wander about aimlessly until we get killed off one by one”) but I just really like the actors (esp. Geoff Rush) and the premise. (By the way, I gave 5 stars to the remake of 13 Ghosts.) The acting here isn’t inspired but it has its moments — and sufficient plot twists. Some think a CGI ghost is a copout but why should this movie be expected to follow different rules than every other (horror as well as sci-fi)?

Animal Farm (1999)

One of my favorite books growing up. I thought I had watched this movie in school at some time and I was right. I continued to watch it anyway. :)Only somewhat faithful to George Orwell's allegorical novel, this made-for-TV adaptation uses real animals as well as Jim Henson's puppets to tell the story of a band of farm animals who stage a revolt against their human owner (Pete Postlethwaite) in a bid for freedom. Several notable names provide the voices of the animals, including Kelsey Grammer as Snowball, Patrick Stewart as Napoleon and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Mollie.

Can "biting satire of totalitarianism" ever coexist in the same sentence as "brought to you by Hallmark?" Yes, if you aren't a purist. Orwell's story is retold through the eyes (and voice) of Jessie the dog. This strategy adds pathos and "humanity" to a rather unemotional and impersonal novella. The downside is that it also adds sentimentality and unnecessary narration (just in case you don't get the point). Thus, the "Hallmark" effect. Orwell's anti-climactic conclusion was also modified to create a Hallmark moment of optimism. Heresy to some, this actually makes sense to have a modern adaptation depict the fall of communism. The core of the story and its satire remain intact. The additional jibe at television as the new opiate of the masses works well, as does its use of mock Socialist Realism styled propaganda film. Thus, the film successfully adapts a 55 year old story that was never meant to be put to the screen in the first place.

Not a bad production (and many bits are actually quite good) *except* for the modified "happy ending". That brought this down to three stars from four stars for me.

Mortal Kombat: The Movie (1995)

I've seen this movie before, but I watched it again. It's a classic in my book and watching it over and over again NEVER gets old!If the minions of the powerful Emperor Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) win another victory in the brutal Mortal Kombat tournament, Earth will fall to the forces of evil. That's why now, it's up to Liu Kang (Robin Shou), Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby), Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson) and Lord Rayden (Christopher Lambert ) to stop the emperor and save the planet. This action-packed flick takes its premise from the popular Mortal Kombat video game.

What a great surprise movie! As most of you know MKII was a disaster. But the original was a cult classic. The music, Sub-Zero, everything! Even if the movie wasn't a video game, it would still be a great movie by itself. Sigh, MKII could of been great...

I saw this in 95 when it first came out. It was a fun movie then and has held up pretty well. Don't expect anything great by today's measure, the graphics and sets seem simple by today's standard. However the action is good, martial arts great and the acting is okay. What more could you ask for?

Penelope (2006)

Forlorn heiress Penelope Wilhern (Christina Ricci) is cursed, and the only way out is to fall in love with someone of suitable stock. But how can she find her soul mate when she's sequestered inside her family's estate with only her parents (Catherine O'Hara and Richard E. Grant) to keep her company? Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon co-produced this untraditional fairy tale about a girl who bucks convention to create her own happy ending.

Penelope is a cute little fairy tale. It is a nice movie with a nice moral. Christina Ricci plays the lead quite well - against her normal role type. She is will known for being edgey and raw - this is sedate and fun, pig nose and ears included. Given the sweetness of the movie it lends toward being very forgettable. It's the type of film you will enjoy watching but remember nothing of it a week later. Still, it is good for children and interesting to see. Definitely recommended.

A moderately funny film that starts out fairly strong and continues to lose steam as it goes. I liked all of the people involved, but this probably needed a rewrite or two to add a little tension to the film. It was fun to see Nick Frost turn up. They should have given him a little more to do. McAvoy is decent here and Ricci is cute in the title role. It's not hard to pull for her. Some of the supporting cast were typically likable such as O'Hara and Dinklage, but that's not enough for a movie to be successful. It is as another reviewer said, somewhat forgettable in the end. Penelope had a great look to it with a great cast thats mostly wasted. Its somewhat watchable, though taken as the lightest of contemporary fairy tale comedies.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

Inventor Flint Lockwood creates a machine that makes clouds rain food, enabling the down-and-out citizens of Chewandswallow to feed themselves. But when the falling food reaches gargantuan proportions, Flint must scramble to avert disaster. Can he regain control of the machine and put an end to the wild weather before the town is destroyed? Bill Hader and Anna Faris lend their vocal talents to this Golden Globe-nominated animated adventure.

Another animated asset to the class of 2009 about a too idealistic inventor who invents a machine that turns water vapor from clouds into food. And loses control of it. Lots of fun for the whole family with no, repeat, no scatological humor. You'll find a love interest, respect between fathers and sons, family appreciation. And even the not so bad guys get a chance at redemption. A feelgood movie the whole family can watch and enjoy and share. Ouch, that sounds like a commercial review, but in this case, the shoe fits, sprayed on or otherwise!

A bit qwerky of course but very funny. I laughed out loud at-least 10 times. Great for kids and adults!

Trailer Trashed: Back in the day, lead good-guy Optimus Prime’s trailer would always mysteriously vanish when he morphed into robot mode. When fans asked why, creators jokingly explained that it was made of “Disappearium.”

Prime Cuts: Hasbro killed Optimus in the 1986 animated film Transformers: The Movie. Taken aback by how upset young fans became, they nixed plans to similarly ice Duke in 1987's G.I. Joe animated feature film. Prime was later resurrected on TV.

Transforming Times: Megatron has always transformed into a gun; the original toy comes from a different era, however. These days, you wouldn't be able to sell it in American stores in its old incarnation. It looks too real.

The Stepfather (2009)

Mom's (Sela Ward) new boyfriend, David (Dylan Walsh), isn't quite right and Michael knows it. A series of mysterious events leads the teen to suspect that David might in fact be a dangerous serial killer known for preying on families. Now, all he needs to do is gather evidence before it's too late. Nelson McCormick directs this spine-tingling remake of the 1987 thriller based on the real-life story of killer John Emil List.

It was nice to see a scary movie that was actually suspensful. I wouldn't say I got scared watching it, but I did jump on occasion when something happened that I didn't expect. It was very refreshing to see a scary movie that had NO sex and NO gore. Most horror movies today are not scary by any means. Being shocked by the violence and sadistic gore DOES NOT make a movie scary. Perhaps if production companies would actually use directors, writers, and actors that actually had some talent, they wouldn't have to use sensationalism and shock to sell their product.

I actually found many parts hilarious and I think that thrillers and horrors that of this type should have a sub-genre called comedy thrillers/horror. Once again another movie where someone makes an illogical and irrational choice by trusting a person who ends up being a psycho. All signs point to this person being unbalanced, but the main characters really don't notice it except for the troubled son who of course no one will believe. It takes getting hit smack dab in the face for the naive and trusting mother and girlfriend to realize somethings not right. Not a great movie... pretty predictable and unoriginal, but I enjoyed it.

Shrooms (2006)

A hallucinogenic trip turns into reality -- or does it? -- when a group of adventurous American college kids on holiday in rural Ireland munch some magic mushrooms and find themselves plagued by nightmarish visions of death. But are they really being stalked and killed, or is it all just drug-induced paranoia? Lindsey Haun, Jack Huston and Maya Hazen star in this spine-chilling slaughterfest from director Paddy Breathnach.

This movie is not scary. There are disturbing images, and I probably jumped a time or two, but it's really just a lot of wandering through the woods. It's not the worst horror movie ever made, but that just means youll sit all the way through it before deciding you've wasted your time.

I thought this would be a decent movie, but turns out it wasn't! The acting was okay, but the movie itself was just terrible. I was bored out of my mind. I couldn't sit still or pay attention. The plot was stupid, and the ending was a shocker yet really stupid. Its not even scary at all!

Zombie Campout (2002)

Playing matchmaker, buddies Bunny (Misty Orman) and Steve (John M. Davis) plan a weekend camping trip to allow Tammy (Tiffany Black) and Trevor (Jeremy Schwab) to get to know each other. But when radioactive meteorites rain down on a nearby cemetery, the dead rise from their graves -- becoming flesh-eating zombies who think the four friends look like a very tasty treat. This campy horror comedy co-stars Alecia Peterman and Cheryl Dallas.

This movie is unbearably boring. There are no redeeming factors in play either. The actors suck, lighting is terrible, effects are so so, the story itself has no point, the dialogue couldnt be written any worse. I mean how many times do they have to say ready to go and be there in a second. I love low budget zombie flicks and I really tired to like something about this one, but I just couldnt do it.

Holy Crap!?!

Has it really been since 12/14/10 since I blogged a review or anything?! Wow. I guess I've just been busy out of the e-world. Expect a load of reviews and whatnot to load up just so I can catch up! Get ready cause I've seen A LOT of movies since then.

Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam(DC Showcase: Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam) ((2010))

This collection of DC Showcase animated shorts boasts the teaming-up of two of DC's most powerful heroes -- Superman (voiced by George Newbern) and Captain Marvel (Jerry O'Connell) -- as they battle villain Black Adam (Arnold Vosloo) and cope with the ethics of utilizing superpowers. Billy Batson, who assumes the mantle of Captain Marvel, turns to Superman for guidance on the moral implications of seeking justice ... or is it revenge?

Loved the whole showcase. The Spectre was probably my favorite overall. Love the dark, gritty way it was shot. I would love to see a full length feature on him. Definitely worth a viewing.

This dvd is a collection of 4 short movies involving Superman and Captain Marvel, the Specter, Green Arrow, and Jonah Hex. I gave this dvd a 4 because of the Specter and Jonah Hex shorts. I though those were great and very well done. Superman/Captain Marvel and Green Arrow were both good too, but the two I mentioned really stood out for me.

Get Him to the Greek ((2010))

Ambitious young record company intern Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) will let nothing get in the way of his planned rise to the top in the music business -- not even the unruly rock star (Russell Brand) he must escort to Los Angeles for the start of his anniversary concert. Doing whatever it takes to get the rocker from Point A to Point B, Aaron encounters all manners of mishaps in this comedy directed by Nicholas Stoller and produced by Judd Apatow.

Following up on his 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, writer/director Nicholas Stoller creates here more of a spin-off for the character of Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) than a direct sequel. Also returning are Sarah Marshall herself (Kristen Bell in a quick cameo) and Jonah Hill (but playing a COMPLETELY different character than he did in the first). The thing that surprised me the most about this movie was its heart. I had expected it to be funny, but I didn't expect that there would be a legitimate emotional core at the center of this film. The other big surprise, to me at least, was how incredibly funny Sean "P. Diddy" Combs was. He's been halfway decent in some smaller movies (see Made right now), but I had no idea that he'd hold his own so well alongside some of the best names in the comedy business right now. There's one scene in particular where it shouldn't have worked at all, but just because it's him, it does. Brilliantly. If you liked Sarah Marshall you should definitely see this, as it more than lives up to its predecessor. If you didn't like it, or didn't see it, just know that this is a stand-alone film and the other isn't prerequisite viewing for you to enjoy yourself. I honestly didn't expect a story centered around Brand's character to work on its own, but I have been pleasantly surprised. This movie is VERY funny and highly recommended.

Way WAY too funny! Russel Brand, I think, has always been funny but you do not expect how funny Diddy would be in this movie. I think it was fantastic movie. Definitely a great movie to watch with friends or when you need a pick me up. *Clap*lol

Babysitter Wanted ((2008))

When she takes a job babysitting a young boy (Kai Caster) for a night at his family's remote farmhouse, sweet college co-ed Angie Albright (Sarah Thompson) becomes the target of a scar-covered creep making mysterious phone calls and prowling outside the windows. Angie gets the drop on the would-be killer, but quickly discovers that her nightmare has just begun. Jonas Barnes and Michael Manasseri direct this darkly humorous horror flick.

This is one of the worst horror films I have ever seen, and the synopsis is slightly misleading. Yes, a scar-covered creep does stalk the main character, but that's only the first half of the film. Unfortunately, the second half of the film is a complete mess. This film is not original at all. The first half is a copy of When a Stranger Calls (or even Halloween?), while the second half mimics The Omen. There might even be traces of The Exorcist in here somewhere, if you think about it long enough. The ending is also completely ridiculous as it leaves you assuming a sequel is on the way. No thanks.

If youre looking for a cheap horror/slasher movie with over-the-top sound effects, really bad acting, and no plot until the end, then this is the movie to watch. I hate myself for watching it. I really do.

The Last Airbender ((2010))

In a world ravaged by the Fire nation's aggression toward the peaceful Air, Water and Earth nations, reluctant youth Aang (Noah Ringer) learns that he's an Avatar -- a rare being who can manipulate all four elements and restore peace to the planet. Now Aang must join with his pal Katara (Nicola Peltz) and other allies to fulfill his destiny. M. Night Shyamalan directs this live-action adaptation of the animated series "Avatar: The Last Airbender."

I watched the animated version before I watched this version and this version just doesn't do justice to the animated version at all. The story line was just too choppy and there was no character buildup so it was hard to empathize or follow the characters at all. The action was simply there because of the story. The special effects was something else though and it was spectacular. But save yourself and watch the animated series instead. The movie could have been better if was longer or split into two movies instead. Compare this to Lord of the Rings and this movie comes up really short. It could have been another Lord of the Rings epic trilogy had there been better dialog and action.

Has M. Night Shyamalan done it again? No, no he hasn't. Or actually if I look at it from a different point of view, maybe I can say that he has done it again. Based off of his last few movies, which were huge disappointments, The Last Airbender certainly followed suit. With a spectacular trailer and a well-written cartoon series to back it up, it was sad to see that the great storyteller, Shyamalan, did a horrible job at telling the story of The Last Airbender.

This movie would have to get significantly better before it would even be bad. A waste of time and brain cells on so many levels. I will go now and bleach my eyeballs. I mean, I love tits as much as the next guy... but this movie was horrible.... it has a rubber dick and balls with eyes and a mouth as the "bad guy". Yep, I just ruined this movie for you. This movie is brutal. Save yourself from it. The only reason I gave it 1 star was because I like boobs. :)

Bigger, Stronger, Faster ((2008))

Filmmaker Chris Bell points the camera at his brothers and himself -- all of them users of steroids -- for this thought-provoking examination of sports, competition and the unyielding pressure to succeed. By exploring the reasons behind steroid use and its effects within his own family, Bell asks whether the winning-is-everything attitude that's so prevalent in American society has truly built a better athlete.

This is a very good documentary because it easily passes the two requirements to make a documentary, which are: it must teach you something, and it must be entertaining. In this film, a young man turns the camera on himself and his two brothers to explain how and why young men might be seduced into the lure of steroid use, how our culture played a role into their decisions, and the facts behind these performance enhancing drugs, which we are all aware of, but know so little about. Of course, all of this would be terribly academic if not for the subtle humor and witty diatribes about how conflicted we are when we worship our big, strong celebrities and athletes, then turn on them when we discover they are not actually supermen. This film really worked. It was informative without being preachy, and personal without being weepy. I highly recommend this.

A rather frank view of the hypocrisy toward anabolic steroid use. On one hand we want to say it should be illegal and on the other we give a nod of approval toward other types of performance enhancers. There is a part which was quite sad dealing with the filmmakers brothers and parents who all appear to be swallowed up in the problem that is any type of drug use when it goes from the realm of casual and/or necessary use into addiction. Presents multiple viewpoints in both positive and negative lights which should be the goal of any film calling itself a documentary.

Stoic ((2008))

Edward Furlong, Shaun Sipos, Sam Levinson and Steffen Mennekes co-star in this sobering psychological drama about three prisoners who torture their cellmate over the course of many long hours, ending in the man's death. But the events leading up to the inmate's crude hanging remain shrouded in shame and mystery. Uwe Boll directs, with a plot based on actual events that occurred in a German prison in 2006.

If you can get past that the prison cell they were in had a door knob, plastic toilet brush, mob and bucket, and all kinds of things just laying around; you might believe they were in an actual jail and not a basic cinder block dorm room on some campus. The characters were confusing and not well defined. I felt no real tie to the victim because he was given no depth other than the other three were picking on him. There were a few reviews that complained about there not being an ending but they missed that you already saw the ending at the beginning! And since you already see how it ends, the director just chose to cut to black and end the movie suddenly. It was ment to be dramatic and cut the viewer off, but instead it just left a majority of peope confused and dissapointed. All in all I gave it 3 stars because it really could of been better, and it could of been worse.

This movie is very different; very intense at times. Three cellmate reaccount the events leading up to a fourth cellmates hanging. This is the kind of movie you want to watch when youre not in a real good mood to start with.

Tenure ((2009))

Despite his outstanding intellect, associate professor Charlie Thurber (Luke Wilson) is a chronic underachiever and has never received university tenure. Aided by his nutty best friend, Charlie launches a final effort to make the grade at Gray College. But a beautiful new teacher (Gretchen Mol) whose ascending star threatens to eclipse him shakes up Charlie's plans in this charming indie comedy from writer-director Mike Million.

This film was a delight to watch, but did get slow at parts. At parts you did feel a little bored, but something would come up to get your attention back for a bit. It had light humor, but it was a nice chuckle and relaxing. The cast in the film was pretty good. Luke Wilson was decent, but not his best role. Now they needed an actor to play a off the wall weird teacher who is obsessed with bigfoot. So they picked David Koechner, who at first I thought wouldn't fit, but he proved me wrong. Gretchen Mol played the main female role and she did a good job. The film is all about a teacher trying to get tenure. That in itself sounds like a boring piece of work, but luckily they did put some humor in the film. That is basically what David Koechner was for. Some scenes were a bit out of the ordinary, but it really fit with the film. This independent film didn't rely on anything crazy like special effects. Just nice dialog and a decent cast. This would be one of those nice Sunday afternoon movies to watch.

Charming, cute, okay all around. Wouldn't watch it again but I don't regret watching it. A movie that explores the politics of academia, where being a good teacher doesn't necessarily you'll be recognized by your peers as one.
